1. Cover considerations... Do you want a NEW cover or want to save an original exterior cover or spine?
Many customers do not realize that all or a portion of original covers can be saved. If you want to save an original cover, there are several bookbinding techniques available. Our splice method is included in the service, but sometimes, this method is not practical or available.
Sometimes, a "Well" method is the better solution. The "Well" method requires more bookbinding time and is a good solution when:
- If the original covers are too thin, brittle or flexible to accept a splicing method;
- If a portion of the original cover is damaged or does not lend itself to a traditional splicing method.
To learn more about the different types of methods we use, see Bible Restoration.
"Well" Method
- Custom cover with "well" to inlay original cover
- Price is in addition to the basic price of a book/Bible repair found in the Price Estimator
Making corners to repair a cover
When saving an original cover, we can also make new distinctive corners in the same material you selected for the cover. Corners protect and beautify the corners of your book or Bible where they need the most protection.
Corners can also be added to hide imperfections and protect worn corners. Click on the photo for a larger image.

5. Spine Bands and Spine Rule Lines
Raised bands on a new spine add character and dimension. The cover material selection can affect the look of the spine bands caused mostly because of the thickness of the materials.
Cowhide plonge and goatskin are thicker materials than bonded leather. Accordingly, spine bands in natural grains have a different look and feel than the spine bands in bonded leather.
A beautiful combination is to combine a natural leather or goatskin and either foil stamp or deboss ruled line(s) above and/or below the spine band so the spine band "pops".
Deboss rule lines are basically foiled rule lines without the foil. The impressions made above and below the spine bands look great. Debossing impresses a die into the surface of a material, leaving a depressed (debossed) imprint of the image. Click on the photos for a larger image.

Repaired Images (together)
8. Page Repair for torn or damaged interior pages and page preservation.
We have a dedicated page to Page Repair if you have pages that need any type of page repair. We suggest you head there.
Japanese tissue paper repair
We use Japanese tissue to preserve centuries-old signatures, recordings, Marriage, Birth and Death genealogy pages and other important pages. As a result, the process creates a stronger page with archival properties. Furthermore, you can write on the pages afterward with additional entries. We also may elect to use Japanese tissue for pages with substantial tears or rips.
Other page repair
For minor tears in paper or to repair paper, we use pH neutral document repair tape and/or mending tissue that is acid-free lignin-free tissue that is very thin yet strong.
Binding Edge repair
When pages are missing portions of their binding edge, these edges need to be replaced so that the pages can be bound back into the book or Bible. We use binding edge tissue for these types of repairs.
Repair for pages with "Dog ears"
"Dog Ears" are corners that are bent. Nearly all Bibles have a few of these pages and when we see them, we will bend them back into place and iron them down. However, if there are more than a few, we offer an hourly service @ $45.00 per hour to give your book or Bible the extra attention it deserves to address "dog ears".
Please know that if you want the book or Bible to be face trimmed, we will need to repair the "dog ears".
Getting a clean page edge with a "Face Trim"
A Face Trim is when we trim the exterior edge of all pages for a clean fresh look. The pages are normally trimmed 1/8”. However, please note that a face trim may also trim any handwritten notes at the edge and would not be recommended if you want to retain existing gold edge gilding. We typically do face trims unless the book or Bible comes to use with gold edge gilding.

- $26.00 per page for larger books and Bibles
Other Page Repair
- Acid-free lignin-free

9. Research and Replace: Solutions for missing or severely damaged text or missing pages
Missing or severely damaged text
On some Bibles, we have the ability to research and reconstruct pages with missing portions of text. Then we can reprint these pages and bind them with the original pages. Please check with us to see if we can perform this service for your Bible version.
The image is an example of what we can do. Note the severe damage on the left portion of the page. The goal here was to reconstruct this page and replace all of the missing text.
Research and Replace
This image is what it the page looks like after the original page is scanned and we after we start the reconstruction process. The original page is imported into computer software where we can start to add the words that are missing. Blue lines assist our efforts to align the placement of the missing letters to the page. This page shows successful replace and repair on the top left portion of the page with the bottom lower portion not yet repaired.
Final Repaired Page:
This image shows the final repairs. We then take the page and reprint it and substitute it in for the original page and cut it to size. Don't worry, the blue lines won't be there when we print it!
Missing pages
We do receive some Bibles and books with missing pages. On some of these, we have been successful in sourcing these pages and binding them with the original book or Bible.
10. Leather Cover Treatments
Many Family Bible covers are cracked and dry and need leather treatments as part of the Bible repair services. Sometimes, this also applies to book repairs, but not as often as the books are not generally as old as some of the Family Bibles we see. Our bookbinders may suggest a leather conditioning treatment, sealant treatment, red rot treatment or a combination of these services.
Option A: Leather Conditioning
The leather conditioning treatment is a popular option as it often brings out the color and reconditions the cover. Please let us know if you want this service and we can provide a quote.
Option B: Leather Sealant
We also see books and Bibles that have corners and edges that are frayed, splitting and coming apart. We can apply sealant to these corners and edges to slow down the damage and seal them. There are some Family Bibles where the leather covers are peeling apart at other locations and there is a need for a product that slows down the flaking process. In this instance, the sealant may bring out additional color in the cover and sometimes, the cover color takes on a slightly different color.
Option C: Leather Conditioning and Sealant Services Combined
Some Family Bibles receive a combination of leather conditioning and sealant services as part of the Bible repair services. Our bookbinders may suggest these procedures. These products can bring out an additional color in the cover and sometimes, the cover color takes on a slightly different color.
Option D: Red Rot Treatment- When leather becomes powdery in your hands
Red rot is a degradation process found in leather that has been vegetable tanned, caused when leather reaches temperatures beyond what it can handle, has been exposed to high relative humidity or from prolonged storage. Red rot leather appears to be powdery on the surface. The damage caused by red rot is irreversible, but can be slowed down and prevented from spreading.
